Resources and opportunities for action on Trident

nuclear bomb over Japan

With a decision on a successor to the UK Trident programme still in the offing, NFPB was pleased to have the opportunity host a special interest group event at Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) at the end of May. In partnership with Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) and Young Friends General Meeting (YFGM ), it was an opportunity to describe the different strands of activity in which each organisation is involved, which includes a number of resources and materials.

Our newest resource is a short play, Trident Dialogues (PDF ), written by NFPB member Jo Alberti. This short drama has been written to promote reflection on the morality and on some of the key issues connected with the possible commissioning of a successor the Trident nuclear weapons system by the UK government. We hope you find this short text helpful as a stimulus to discussion and action, whether you use it for read-throughs – or even short performances – by groups, or individually.

In collaboration with other churches, a briefing from the Network of Christian Peace Organisations has just been published. Please contact the NFPB office if you would like paper copies of this or of the play, or click here for a PDF .

Resources from QPSW include everything from a briefing to a set of answers to Frequently Asked Questions to a newly published book by Tim Wallis, ‘The Truth About Trident’. Information about all of this is available from http://www.quaker.org.uk/our-work/peace/nuclear-disarmament. There are book launch events around the country for this, with Edinburgh being the location for the one taking place on 17th June, the day before NFPB members meet in the same place. This month (June 2016) will see action from a range of groups at Burghfield, the partner site of Aldermaston in Berkshire, where the UK’s nuclear weapons have been and are due to be produced. Coordinated by Trident Plougshares, information about this is at: http://tridentploughshares.org/june-2016-briefing-materials-index/.

And on 13th July, another coalition of groups is organising a lobby of MPs. Information about this, as well as lots of other campaigning resources, is available from http://www.cnduk.org/get-involved/events/item/2437-mass-lobby-of-mps

At the interest group meeting at BYM, members identified the ways in which they could use these resources and engage with these and other activities around the country. They were keen to both support Friends in their own Quaker Meetings, but also to reach out to non-Quaker and not such obvious anti-Trident groups and people.

Throughout the year, Friends in Scotland hold a Meeting for Worship outside Faslane, the next one being on 19th June. See our calendar page for more information
