Walking the Walk - 100 years of peace witness

This event has now taken place. See reports here: http://nfpb.org.uk/walkreport and http://nfpb.org.uk/walkmessage

h3. From Richmond Castle to Menwith Hill, North Yorkshire
Saturday 29th June – Friday 5th July 2013

(Sunday 30th June – Thursday 4th July for day participants)

The walk begins at Richmond Castle, where the ‘Richmond Sixteen’ (conscientious objectors in WW1) were imprisoned and ends at Menwith Hill, the US Air Force electronic communications base on the North Yorks moors. It links two significant sites of peace witness which span the Northern Friends Peace Board’s first hundred years.

We aim to gather a core party of 18 Friends (16 walkers and two drivers) who will do the whole route. NFPB Members have this first opportunity of booking for the full week. It will also be possible for other people to join on a day basis and we are considering the best ways of enabling this wider participation. Designed to be gently-paced, the walk will cover approximately 35 miles over five days. The route is very beautiful and full of variety, including Yorkshire Dales moorland, valleys and woods. The distance will be covered in sections of varying lengths, the longest stretch being no more than about 8 miles. You will be able to walk in a small group at you own pace. A minibus will take you to the beginning of each day’s section and collect you at the end, returning you to our base for the week.

The walk will begin and end with an act of witness:

1 An open-air Meeting for Worship in the grounds of Richmond Castle.

2 We join the annual ‘Independence from America Day’ demonstration outside the Menwith Hill base, organised by Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases.

The core party of 18 F/friends will be based at ‘Bivouac’, nr Masham, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 4JZ http://www.thebivouac.co.uk .

Bivouac provides luxury camping (‘glamping’) accommodation in 4- and 5-bedded yurts, in an exceptionally attractive location. It is run as a low-carbon sustainable community. Almost totally ‘off-grid’, it has an attractive restaurant and well-appointed toilet blocks. Vegetarian food (breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals) will be provided, cooked by the chef at Bivouac. The party will gather at Bivouac on the afternoon of Sat 29th June and depart from there on the morning of Friday 5th July. The cost for walkers in the core party will be £280 per person. That includes your shared accommodation for six nights, all meals, and minibus transport. If you are able to be one of the minibus drivers your expenses will be subsidised (exact cost to be negotiated). To secure your place, PLEASE COMPLETE THE BOOKING FORM ENCLOSING A DEPOSIT OF £25 (payable to Northern Friensd Peace Board). The balance will be payable by 31 May 2013.
