Nonviolence Works!

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

An opportunity for the Christian community to engage in creative peacemaking.
Pope France has called nonviolence ‘a style of politics for peace’. Come and explore what that might mean in practice at a series of seminars building on the work of the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative and the Vatican.
With speakers: Marie Dennis, author and co-president of Pax Christi International who has played a leading role in the joint Vatican/Pax Christi International initiative on Nonviolence and Just Peace.
and Maria Stephan, senior policy fellow at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), where she focuses on the dynamics of civil resistance and its relevance for violent conflict prevention and democratic development.
17:30 – 19:30 BST – Leeds Beckett University, Portland Crescent, Leeds LS1 3HB https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/nonviolence-works-tickets-36653995086

A DIVIDED BRITAIN: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE NORDICS?

Thursday, October 5, 2017

12th Huddersfield Quaker Peace Lecture, given by George Lakey. George Lakey – speaks to the polarization now experienced in both Britain and his own country (the USA) and predicts that it will become more extreme as inequality heightens. What he has learned from studying the Nordic countries is that polarization may offer as much opportunity as anxiety. – 19:30–21:00 – Huddersfield Quaker Meeting, Friends Meeting House Church Street Paddock, HD1 4TR – Facebook link https://www.facebook.com/events/1865920143688652

Workshop on populism

A workshop with a focus on populism was facilitated by NFPB members for Westmorland Regional Meeting at the end of April. Although the term is used in a variety of ways, populism has in some ways become a shorthand term for some of the less desirable aspects of civic and political life, both in the UK and further afield.

UK General Election 2017 - peace concerns

voting for peace

Our society and our planet need politics that will enable people to live sustainably, with respect for differences and diversity, promoting human rights for all.
